Carpet and Rugs:
Natural fibres like wool have always been eco-friendly, but Fabrica Fine Carpet and Rugs takes being environmentally friendly to the next level with a recycling, energy conservation, and water conservation program. In addition to this, Fabrica uses Wools of New Zealand which are the only widely available carpet fibre not made with oil. Wool is renewable, biodegradable, recyclable, and energy efficient.
Another option for carpet is Mohawk’s SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer. The Sorona polymer consists of 37% corn oil, which is renewable and does not affect the food that we eat because it uses corn husks and other leftover materials. The production takes 30% less energy than a typical nylon, and emits 63% less greenhouse gas.
Cork, Bamboo, and Hardwood:
Cork is a long-lasting natural flooring that it is sustainable because the Mediterranean Oak trees are stripped of their bark and naturally renews itself. This doesn’t harm the trees, and no trees get cut down. Our premium cork comes from Corkart, check out the link for more details on the harvesting process.
Not all bamboo flooring is treated or created equally. Teragren Bamboo is the worldwide leader for bamboo flooring and accessories. They are FloorScore-certified, which means the products are tested for 78 VOCs. Bamboo that goes into Teragren floors are Optimum 5.5 Moso bamboo which gets harvested at its peak of hardness. Bamboo is a quick growing grass that can grow up to 1 meter per day, making it an environmentally friendly and renewable resource.
With hardwood flooring, choosing a North American supplier like Award Hardwoods or Appalachain Flooring is a great start to being friendly on the environment. These hardwoods spend less time in transport, hence less of an impact on our environment. Appalachian Flooring uses FSC certified trees which safeguards natural wildlife habitats, freshwater lakes, and rivers. Hardwood and laminate flooring that comes in from Europe needs to be tested for off-gassing, and they must meet the lowest ranking of E1. Products that come in from China are not tested and usually contain formaldehyde (which is considered a cancer risk).
